Meet Megan

My name is Megan Shambaugh and I am a licensed, trauma-informed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) based in New York City.

Originally from Pennsylvania, I received my BA in Psychology and my BS in Neuroscience from Temple University in Philadelphia. I then moved to Chicago to pursue graduate school at Rosalind Franklin University. There, I completed doctoral-level training in Clinical Psychology and gained years of experience in psychotherapy, psychological assessment, research, and supervision across hospital, academic, and private practice settings. This foundation allows me to bring both depth and flexibility to the therapeutic process, carefully tailoring care to each client’s needs.

As a therapist, I offer a collaborative space where you can bring your full self—your questions, worries, hopes, and longings. We will work through your story at your pace to understand your experiences and foster your version of self-discovery. Many of the people I work with are dealing with the weight of unresolved trauma and it’s after effects. Whether that is showing up for you as depression, anxiety, loss of purpose, or relationship challenges, I am here and committed to figuring it out together. Some of my clients are mothers, creatives, established professionals, students or adults returning to school, finding their way through identity shifts, academic pressures, and big questions about belonging and purpose. Others are seeking deeper understanding of long-standing patterns that feel hard to change.

Healing Happens Together

My approach to therapy is centered around the belief that, as humans, we are all wired for connection. My works is relational and psychodynamic, guided by curiosity about how past experiences shape present struggles and how new patterns can emerge when we have a safe space to reflect and grow. I draw from trauma-informed practices and evidence-based approaches like Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), Narrative Exposure Therapy, and Internal Family Systems (IFS). Together, we will explore not only how to relieve symptoms, but also how to make sense of your experiences, uncover what no longer serves you, and build new ways of relating to yourself and others.

As a queer woman, I bring lived experience and commitment to working with the LGBTQ+ community. I know the importance of having a therapeutic space where identity is affirmed, where queerness can be explored with nuance, and where the unique joys and challenges of LGBTQ+ life are met with presence and care. Supporting queer clients in navigating identity, relationships, family dynamics, and resilience is an essential part of my work.

Outside of my work as a therapist, I am often spending time with loved ones and engaging with my Brooklyn community in shared garden spaces, practicing yoga and spirituality, exploring nature through hiking, camping, and backpacking, writing poetry, and restoring furniture through wood-working activities.
